From the Mazomanie Historical Society

The Mazomanian was a short-lived newspaper published in Mazomanie in 1866. There are no extant issues.

History

W. H. Brainerd and Henry R. Boardman began publishing the Mazomanian in March, 1866.

We have received the first number of “The Mazomanian,” a neat six column paper published weekly at Mazomanie, by Brainard & Boardman. The latter served his apprenticeship in this office and is a most worthy young man. We welcome the new sheet and hope the enterprise may be abundantly successful. Mazomanie is a growing and thriving village and by extending to it liberal support can sustain a paper.

--”Another Dane County Paper,” Wisconsin State Journal, April 2, 1866.

Although the Wisconsin State Journal greeted the Mazomanian with optimism, the paper was discontinued in November, 1866, due to a lack of subscribers.

The Mazomanian has been discontinued for want of support.

--”State News,” Semi Weekly Wisconsin, (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, December 1, 1866).

Excerpts

While there are no extant issues of the Mazomanian, Kittle’s History of the Township and Village of Mazomanie includes several excerpts from the April 5, 1866 issue and also references later issues.
