Sauk County COVID-19 cases surge

Sauk County Public Health (SCPH) reports that, in the past 14 days, 214 new cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed in Sauk County residents, for an average of 15.3 new cases every day in that period. That is Sauk County’s highest number of new cases over a 2-week period ever, and compares poorly to the August average of less than 9 new cases/day. The data indicate that Sauk County is experiencing a high burden of COVID-19, and that this burden is growing. As of October 1, there have been 944 total cases of COVID-19 in Sauk County, with 108 confirmed, actively infectious residents.

“Over the past couple of weeks, we have definitely been going in the wrong direction,” said Tim Lawther, Sauk County Health Officer. “Now is not the time to reduce our vigilance, or reduce the protective measures put in place in schools, businesses, homes, and the community.”

SCPH continues to remind people that maintaining social distance and wearing a face covering when in public remain the best defenses against COVID-19. “We cannot keep going back and forth on when we implement those basic protective measures and when we don’t,” said Lawther. “We need to do it until we end this thing. It is inconvenient, yes, but it is also the only way we’ll get back to our normal community life.”
