Andrew Gallus and Kirk Olson’s terms are expiring. Gallus is running unopposed for Village President and Olson is running for the board. There is one more seat open and two more candidates: Margaret Budde and Nathan Taylor.

April’s non-partisan local races are shaping up to be at least a little interesting in the Star News coverage area, with competitive races and a few new village presidents stepping into office.

Arena Cheese takes Best of Class


Arena Cheese took Best of Class in the U.S. Championship Cheese Contest for their original recipe Colby Jack cheese. They also took third place in the class of marbled curd cheeses. “I am proud of all the team members of Arena Cheese. It takes everyone’s participation to produce award winning cheese and we do it every day,” Bill Hanson of Arena Cheese said. Cedar Grove Cheese of Plain took third place in the hard sheep’s milk cheese class for their Donatello cheese. Arena Cheese took second place in flavored cheese curds class for their garlic cheese curds. The contest was held recently in Green Bay.

Multiple agencies in Dane and Sauk Counties qualified for Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin grants for their efforts last year.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds everyone that now is the time to prune oak trees as there’s high risk of harmful pests spreading tree diseases such as oak wilt come April. Oak wilt is Wisconsin’s most destructive oak disease, killing thousands of healthy trees annually.

Fire in Township of Troy put out by Sauk City Fire with assistance

At 2:44 p.m. on February 14, 2023, Sauk City Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched along with Prairie du Sac Fire, Merrimac Fire and Sauk Prairie Ambulance as auto aid to a residence on Schauer Road in the Township of Troy for a reported structure fire.
